Fisher Space Pens uses a specially formulated thixotropic ink and the Ink Cartridge is gas pressurized to 35 PSI. A small ball type float is used to separate the gas charge from the ink and it is hermetically sealed to hold the charge. This means that these refills will not dry out like other pens and they have a shelf life of over a hundred years. These refills do not rely on gravityand they can write upside down, in the vacuum of space, underwater, in the freezing cold of -30° F, and the boiling heat of 250° F. The precision fit Stainless Steel, Tungsten-Carbide ballpoint and socket keeps them leak free and writing longer, cleaner, and more consistently than any other ink cartridges.
